Vocal Virtuosity in Late Nineteenth-Century French Opera
In this talk, Dr. Sean Parr explores how Romantic ideas of virtuosity and madness manifest in the soprano vocalism in late nineteenth-century French operas. Striking case studies from operas by Thomas, Massenet, Delibes, and Offenbach showcase the breadth of what vocal virtuosity can signify in operatic performance, ranging from technical brilliance to dance, joy, madness, and beyond. These examples of sonic spectacle align sopranos singing in the stratosphere with the extravagance of Second Empire Paris, the exoticism of colonial imagination, and even the screams of hysteria.
